These are 3 versions of a spread that I was working on last week. I got excited thinking about ways to integrate and relate the different sources of information but it became clear that the only way I could really figure it out was after I had finalized, edited, and consolidated the exact pieces of text I was going to use (rather than deciding what to use based on how I wanted to organize it...which makes no sense and was driving me crazy). Unfortunately I still don't have anything concrete enough to post yet. Work work work!
quickly tried a few alternate fonts for the big "you" spread of the type specimen. here's the original in firmin didot: took out the unnecessary period: made the background 'you's italic: some other fonts I tried but so far I still prefer the firmin didot: would love your suggestions!
Here's where I'm at right now with the type specimen: this is the older version of spread 3: new version. tightened up the type on the left and tried to fix the space under "suffering." tried switching the glyphs on the two "f"s but i think i like the first way better...more tortured, like wringing hands...also tried spacing out the mrs eaves smallcaps at the bottom. what do you think? would love to hear your feedback. older version of spread 4: version 2: eliminating all the bold: next is that big "you" page that folds out. will post trials of that in the next post. here's spread 6. i wanted it to be really minimal and quiet, to follow the big, strong YOU. but too minimal? haven't spent much time on this spread. going to have to do a lot of trials i think. is any of it working so far? in the specimen i showed in class, i had printed out the "remembered" on the facing page and cut it out to paste over the text type. it created a window which i ended up really liking so i'm going to keep the hole in the final.
better? at all? page breaks between the "O" and "R" in the second "words" which is why there's the weird space.
too much as-is, i think but i'm wondering if i should work with this idea over the first one. what do you think? spreading into the first page or keeping separate? what i like about this is that it reflects the content better - this reaching between lonelydude's words and the suffering world of his long lost. but it's overdone right now.
above takes away some of the stuff and below changes the position of "then listen"
With that in mind, this is my attempt at suspending judgment and allowing myself to just get something on the page that I can work over and obsess about later (rather than crippling myself with self-doubt and white space). This is also my first experience working with type in this way so any constructive feedback/pushes in the right direction would be much appreciated! Let's see if I can figure out how to upload... 1:

4-5:
oof. i am really not happy with this one.
6-7:
would probably be better if i used more text?
8-9:
just threw the 'you's together randomly around the page so haven't even begun to adjust. overall i actually like the way they came together though i know there might be a lot wrong with it.
Still working on setting the last few pages in inDesign...
